A CITY TO GET CURIOUS ABOUT

Choose a feeling.
Find a place.

Start with the landmark that catches your eye, then leave a little room around it. Pair the castle with the coast, a market visit with lunch, or a mountain outing with a slow evening back in town. This is your guide to exploring; for seasons and everyday routines, visit Living in Alanya ↗.

01 / HISTORY, WITH A SEA VIEW

The old city.
A whole new perspective.

Follow the peninsula from its hilltop walls down to the water. Alanya’s history is part of the landscape.

START ABOVE THE CITY

Alanya Castle

The peninsula helps explain Alanya before you have read a single sign. Sea on both sides, the city below and stone walls crossing the hillside: it is a place to take your time.

Much of the surviving defensive landscape belongs to the Seljuk period under Alaeddin Keykubad I. Look beyond the main view for lanes, gateways and the relationship between the upper castle and the harbour.

Make it your day · Choose a manageable section of the hillside, wear shoes for uneven ground and leave time for a shaded stop.

THE HARBOUR LANDMARK

Kızılkule · The Red Tower

The red, octagonal tower is a signature of Alanya’s waterfront. Built in the 13th century to protect the harbour and shipyard, it makes a natural starting point for getting to know the old city from sea level.

Look back at the walls climbing the slope, then continue towards the shipyard. The close-up textures are as rewarding as the skyline.

WHERE THE CITY MET THE SEA

The Seljuk Shipyard

The vaulted bays of the Tersane open directly towards the water. This historic working waterfront connects the castle’s story with shipbuilding, repair and maritime life.

Pair it with the Red Tower rather than rushing to another part of town. The shoreline gives you a different angle on the same historic peninsula.

UNDER THE PENINSULA

Damlataş Cave

Discovered during harbour construction in 1948, Damlataş sits on the western side of the castle peninsula. Its stalactites and enclosed chambers bring a completely different atmosphere to a coastal day.

Combine a visit with the Damlataş area and Kleopatra shore. Check current admission arrangements before setting out.

A SEPARATE DAY OUT

Syedra Ancient City

East of central Alanya, Syedra spreads across rising ground with a wide Mediterranean outlook. Ancient streets and building remains turn a visit into an exploration of the landscape as much as the ruins.

Set aside a separate outing, with time for the journey and the site’s slopes. Bring water and check current access with the museum service.

02 / THE COAST, AT YOUR PACE

Some days need
very little planning.

Pick a stretch of shore, bring a book and leave space for lunch. Beach days can be as simple as that.

Kleopatra Beach

On the western side of the centre, the shore opens into a long view towards the castle peninsula. Come for time beside the water, or simply enjoy the setting from the promenade.

Pair it with Damlataş for an easy change of scene. Follow the beach flags and choose swimming conditions that suit you.

İncekum Beach

İncekum Beach

Head west for another coastal day around İncekum. Let the beach be the main event, with time to settle in rather than fitting too many stops into one outing.

The beach and nearby nature park are different stops. Check the access point, facilities and return journey that work for your plans.

03 / A GREENER ALANYA

Trade the shoreline
for the sound of water.

Give the inland landscape its own day. These are separate excursions, with different routes and rhythms.

Sapadere Canyon
Sapadere Canyon ·
CANYON SCENERY

Sapadere

Rock walls, water and greenery give Sapadere a very different character from the city’s open coast. Follow the visitor route at a pace that leaves time to look around.

Plan the journey as well as the destination. Access arrangements can change after weather or maintenance, so check the municipality’s latest visitor information before travelling.

A SLOWER LUNCH

The Dim River valley

Upstream from the coastal city, the Dim valley offers water, shade and riverside dining settings. A lunch stop can become the centre of the outing, with the rest of the day kept deliberately unhurried.

The coastal river mouth and the inland restaurant area are different places. Choose the exact destination first, then plan transport and a comfortable return.

04 / DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT

A new angle
on a familiar coastline.

Three ways to change the pace. Pick the experience that suits your day.

Ride above the coast

The cable car near Damlataş brings the hillside and the long sweep of the shore into view. Make the journey part of a castle visit, then leave time to explore on foot.

Check operating times and weather arrangements before planning around the ride.

See Alanya from the water

A boat outing changes the scale of the castle cliffs and the harbour skyline. Compare the route, time on board and atmosphere before choosing a trip.

Ask about shade, group size, swimming stops and the day’s sea conditions.

Find a higher viewpoint

The northern hills reveal the city as a broad arc between mountains and sea. Make a viewpoint the destination, whether you arrive by vehicle or on a route suited to your ability.

For cycling, account for slopes, road traffic and heat when choosing the route.

05 / THE TASTE OF A PLACE

Make room
at the table.

Start with something familiar. Then ask what is local, seasonal or worth trying today.

FROM BREAKFAST TO A LOCAL SPECIALITY

Let lunch take its time.

A leisurely Turkish breakfast is an inviting start: small plates, bread, tea and conversation. Later, look for a simple lokanta or a menu that introduces you to a local dish.

Ask about Gülüklü soup

Also called Hülüklü, this Alanya speciality is associated with gatherings and hospitality. Small meatballs and chickpeas are part of its character; preparations can vary, so ask what goes into the version being served.

Follow the setting

Think trout in the river valley, a Mediterranean salad or local oranges. Choose a few flavours to remember rather than trying to order everything at once.

Let the market inspire you

Walk between the produce stalls, look at what is in season and buy a little for later. Shopping for fruit can be as much a part of discovering Alanya as visiting a landmark.

Confirm today’s market location and opening day locally; this archive photograph records an earlier market scene.

Tea with a view of Alanya harbour

A small glass. A longer pause.

Leave room between plans for tea or Turkish coffee. A café table is a good place to compare the morning’s discoveries and decide what you would like to do next.

Choose the mood that suits you: a busy street, a quiet courtyard or a view towards the water.

06 / WHEN THE LIGHTS COME ON

Alanya after dark.

Keep the evening open. Dinner, conversation or music can set a very different pace.

BARLAR SOKAĞI & THE HARBOUR

Follow the evening atmosphere.

The streets around the harbour bring together cafés, bars and nightlife. Barlar Sokağı — Bar Street — is a familiar name for an evening out in this central setting.

Start with dinner or a drink and decide whether you want a lively night or a quieter table. Music, crowds and opening times vary by venue and season; take a look before settling in.

Keep your return journey simple, particularly if you are staying outside the centre.

OR SIMPLY STAY FOR DINNER

There is room for a slower evening.

You do not need a packed night out. Find a terrace, order something you enjoy and watch the city change pace. An early dinner and an unhurried conversation can be a complete plan.

PUT A FEW IDEAS TOGETHER

One day.
Your kind of Alanya.

Choose one main outing and leave room around it. These are suggestions to mix, not a fixed schedule.

01 · HISTORY & COAST

Castle → Damlataş → seaside pause

Start with the hillside, return towards the cave area and finish beside Kleopatra Beach. Allow for the slopes and your preferred transport.

02 · A CHANGE OF SCENE

Dim valley → a long lunch → town

Give the river its own outing, then return to the centre for a relaxed evening. Keep separate excursions for another day.

03 · FOOD & THE CITY

Market → local flavours → harbour

Check which market is running, try something new for lunch and finish with the waterfront as the lights come on.
